Yamaga Kominka
Re: Yamaga Kominka
Gday
Work is progressing along, I am working it out as I go.
The two photos are of the two rooms I am working on.
The finished ceiling was insulated then plaster board fitted and then painted. Also some work has been done on the walls filling in gaps around the edges where the mud and straw meets the timber. I have to then put a few layers of shikkui. This is a 8 mat room and will be our bedroom.
The second photo is of the larger room 5m x 8m which was insulated but lined with plywood (veneer) which is much lighter and easier to carry up the ladder. I struggled with the plaster board in the bedroom so decided to use ply as the ceiling is much higher.
I'll start on the walls next week.
Cheers

Re: Yamaga Kominka
Does indeed look great, will you plaster over the plywood as well or paint it ?
Can't wait to see how it looks when it's finished.

Gday
Well after a lot of thought I decided to go down the wallpaper road to cover the plywood as it hides the plywood joints and plywood imperfections. Paint wouldn't hide the joins and I have been told that even after applying a sealer~ etch before applying shikkui to the ply it may still discolour plus I think I would wear it as I apply it overhead.
Considering it was my first attempt at wallpapering I am reasonably happy with the results.

Re: Yamaga Kominka
I hear you on the wall paper Tom, it looks great and is so much easier than overhead plastering and then having to pick the plaster out of your hair after
Re: Yamaga Kominka
We have had to builders in for the last week and will be here for a another couple.
The builders drawings show the two floors of our house. The plan is to finish upstairs by relocating the stairs which go down to the genkan, which is inconvenient as we have to put shoe's on to move around the house. The stairs have been moved and now come down in the dining/ kitchen area.
A new timber floor is being laid and a wall is being built to seperate the upper lounge from the stairs and new toilet ( no more late night trips downstairs shoes on/off through the genkan to the toilet) .
Two new windows are also being fitted.
The bedroom is 3.6 X 3.6 metres which is exactly the size of a 8 mat room so we have used the 8 mats next to the front door for our bedroom which puts them to good use as we still have our formal 8 mat room .
I'll post some pics shortly.
Cheers

Re: Yamaga Kominka
Sounds like you are having quite a bit of work done Tom but should make life a whole lot easier, got to be more convenient once those stairs have been moved.
Looking forward to seeing the photos

Re: Yamaga Kominka
This is the almost finished bedroom all it needs is a new window and electrics.
The writing is on the underside of the main horizontal beam and tells when the house was built and who built it etc.

Re: Yamaga Kominka
That looks great Tom, it's really nice having something like the inscription from the original builder on the underside of the beam. That totally adds something to the history of the building. Are you going to add something like "Restored by xxxxTom in 2018'
