Man that should keep you toasty and warm in the winter and nicer to work with rather than rockwool.

Re: Yamaga Kominka
Are polystyrene sheets that good at insulation? I thought those were used more as a vapour barrier, above the foam pieces to stop moisture getting in and wrecking it.
Re: Yamaga Kominka
Had this storage alcove completely rebuilt by two carpenters they also rebuilt 5 storm shutters, relined the butsuma and supplying 4 fusuma and repaired doors , sliders etc.
It's now has a new floor, walls and insulated . Had a sparky run power and antenna connection .
They are fantastic tradesmen and it was my first time seeing how it's done in Japan.
I've since relined a smaller storage area more or less the same as they did.
Cheers

Re: Yamaga Kominka
When we bought this house there were a few pieces of old furniture left behind. Last week my wife and i visited the 95 year old lady that until 2 years lived her whole life in this house. We asked her if she had any old photos of the house and garden. She told us that they were lost in the move. Well today I decided to clean and wax the chest. One draw was jambed. I eventually got it open and discovered her complete photo collection. I was stoked and we've handed them to her niece who's our neighbour.
Hopefully when she sorts through them we might be able to get a few of the house.
Cheers

Re: Yamaga Kominka
Gday,
Well we've been back in Japan for a week and have started to rebuild the two upstairs rooms. As the photos show we've been insulating with fiberglass mats and will cover them in either dry wall but mostly veneer and eventually the ceiling will be either painted or wallpapered white as it's a little dark up there and also should highlight the beams .We've got to move the stairs back to there original position and whilst doing that we'll change them to a Western tread.
Cheers

Those beams will look gorgeous next to white. You can use shikkui on top of veneer boards, you just have to apply a special sealer first.
Re: Yamaga Kominka
Thanks Gonbechan I didn't know that I'll look into it, that will probably sway us towards shikkui.

Re: Yamaga Kominka
you can also use wooden lathes or plasterboard. The latter might give you even more insulation.

Re: Yamaga Kominka
That is going to look awesome when you finished it xxxxTom, the beams are in fantastic condition and having a white finish next to them will really highlight them.
