The stain looks really good

Did you have to mask off either side of the beams to be stained or just very good brush control ?

Thank you.

Just brush control. There are actually a few places where I messed up, but I will be painting the actual walls between the beams anyways soon enough, so that will cover up any stain splashes/marks.

Next job is painting inside. I am hoping I can just paint over the existing white wallpaper. In some places, I will need to remove sections and recoat with some plaster before painting (some of the wallpaper is peeling from rain damage a few years ago). How do I know whether the wallpaper is the type that can be painted over? I was thinking just to take a cutting of a section I plan to replace with plaster when I go to the DIY store....

I didn't realise there was wallpaper that you can't paint over, is it glossy or something ?

No, it seems like regular stuff. Do you need to "prime" it first or anything?

I'm none too sure really, I've never had wallpaper in my life. Always had painted plaster walls. Have you got an unobtrusive areas you test just painting it on ? My guess would be that most modern paints can cope with a wide variety of surfaces and unless you had some sort of very glossy paper it would go on just fine but I'm honestly not an expert but I'm sure the home centre staff would be able to tell you.

We used a diatomaceous 'shikkui' paint made for using over wallpaper for a quick fixup when we bought this house. It is still looking good.
