That's great news man, I guess sometimes weeds can cover up crops and help hide them from hungry pests .

Re: What did you do today?
Lovely tomatoes Eric,
Was working my way through the pumpkin patch today, slipping melon trays under the developing butternuts and came across this curious beast.
It's a little different from ordinary butternuts
Will be interesting to see how it develops as I've never seen one like this before.
e2a:
Just got back from visiting the tanbo down below our house and never seen so many hotaru in my life, there must have been several hundred gently flying over the rice and lining the trees either side of the rice paddies. Truly a magical sight.

Re: What did you do today?
What do you have to do on the training day Eric ? I sometimes see our local volunteer fire brigade doing something in the local michi no eki car park at night but not sure what they are doing.

Re: What did you do today?
Our local volunteer firemen do a lot of running around with hoses, climbing up and down a little tower and then they drink a ton.

Re: What did you do today?
The michi-no-eki firemen are probably training for the Chiba Sohou Taikai. Each town either has tryouts and makes a team, or selects one of the sub-units in rotation.
The SouTai is sooooooooo Japanese. The teams are judged on how perfect to form they can be, and also on the time it takes to knock down the bullseye target at the end of the field. Every movement, every placement of feet, hands, etc... the placement of the equipment.... it is hillarious.
The whole point is to make your unit work like fingers on a hand. I suppose it does that.
This was my bun-dan's team two years ago at the Ibaraki SouTai. (the action starts at about 2:40ish) We were solidly in the middle, but our director- the man screaming at the other members, won first prize as director.
Gonbe-chan- our training is just going out, checking that the equipment works, a quick informal meeting, and then going home. We do have drinking parties about 3 times a year though at local izakaya in our territory.

Re: What did you do today?
Thanks Eric,
I think you might be right as they spend a lot of time unrolling hoses and also have a pool set up.
Had this bad boy bothering me all morning while tractoring today
Unfortunately things didn't go well for the abu when it got within arms reach

Re: What did you do today?
Ours just plonk a bunch of lawn chairs on the road right outside their little firestation and crack out the drinkipoos.
At oshogatsu they go around yelling 火の用心!and then go back and drink again.
Most of them look well over 60 so I doubt they are allowed at the taikai.
There is another station about 1km away with a bigger building, a higher tower and a bunch of much younger dudes.
I have never seen them drinking.

Re: What did you do today?
Picked 7.5 Kg of blackberries. Froze 2Kg and made 3 liters of blackberry juice.
Then I went to the beach and played in the surf (I would like to say that this 44 year old man did something manly like surfing or shark wrestling, but just played like a little kid) for two hours before starting classes.
(the audio is really noisy, so be warned)
