Grass Vs. Artificial Lawn

Post by Otona Cream Pie »

I scattered clover seeds in certain trouble areas on my mountain land. The clover is suuuuper hardy and comes in fast. I like the mix and when it's mowed, it's all the same green as far as that goes.

Does anyone have experience with breaking up a concrete path?

In the garden, there is currently a long concrete path that winds all the way from the car port to the house. I want it gone!

I'm sure I can rent a jackhammer and smash it to pieces, but how would I dispose of all the concrete? Is there a service of hiring a skip, or large bags, that could be collected after I've done the work?
Bought the house, now it's time to renovate!

How thick is the slab?
Do you mind a good workout and a few sore days afterwards?

Less than 10 cm of older un-reinforced concrete (probable scenario if it’s just a walkway) is very doable.

I broke a lot of concrete with a Sledgehammer and a mattock (the kind people dig bamboo shoots with) or something to pry the broken bits loose. I can get it done faster this way than with any electric sledge hammer I’ve used (they seem to be for more delicate work!). Start at the corners/edges and pry pieces loose and out of the way as you go. If you don’t, it binds/locks itself in place and then it’s even more work.

Invite a friend you don’t like so much and serve him beer or coffee til it’s done. Wear safety glasses. Did I mention this is classic beer drinking kind of work? I prefer Mediterranean style- wine!

Stay away from windows or put up something like a tarp or plywood to stop any chance projectiles. Not common until you’re near something expensive….

Find where the local concrete “recycle” place is. Google is your friend. Key words might include コンクリート リサイクル 再生

Borrow or rent a truck or pile it in the back of the Honda a little at a time and make a few trips.

Most of the above applies whether you’re using a sledgehammer or a jackhammer.

Don’t forget the adult refreshments. Think of them as liquid enthusiasm or energy drinks.

It’s important to pace yourself to stay in the feel no pain or exhaustion, rock and roll zone.

My brother said it’s a good way to lose friends.
Where I’m from, real friends keep coming back for more. I’ve been blessed with a few like that.

If you can rent one of those mini excavators, it will be faster and easier....and more fun. (and less pain) Not to mention you can dig a pond or do any other garden features that require digging at the same time ;)
