Dealing with leaf eaters

Post by Tora »

My squash sprouts are behind devastated by ウリハムシ (cucurbid beetle?).

They look like an elongated ladybug with no spots and a washed out color. I’ve felt with small numbers in the past with the “smooshing” method but the numbers are overwhelming. As I am trying to get 3-4 of them, 8-10 fly away and come back when I’ve moved on.

Does anyone have any advice for dealing with them in a non toxic manner which doesn’t require me to be standing out in the middle of the field chasing after small insects all day?

I tried sprinkling ash from the brush burn pile (as per one website’s recommendation) with questionable results. I also may try spraying with homemade mokusakueki 木酢液I collected in a bucket from the outside elbow in my stovepipe. Some of the wood we’ve been burning ha been less than ideally dry....

Im not giving the plants the attention I think they need as I’m in a hurry to get a lot done on our house before the rainy season gets here. Also learning the painful way why you never see tall concrete contractor.

These jerks have gone crazy on my zucchini, cucumber and squash seedlings. I don't have any advice to add, just wanted to commiserate. And now I know the actual name of this fiendish enemy, so thanks for that! Seems like a few of the leaves had a growth spurt and the plants are doing better overall, but the zucchinis may have a hard time recovering as they've been almost completely chowed.
