Import of Beetroot and Swiss chard seeds are banned

Post by Zasso Nouka »

We heard from one of the seed companies we deal with that they can no longer import beetroot or swiss chard seeds due to concerns over a disease they can transmit. The ban could last a few years or could be longer but they currently don't know.

So if anyone wants to grow beetroot or swiss chard over the next few years buy up any stocks of seed you can find and think of making your own seeds for the future.

Apparently up until now most beetroot seeds was imported from either the US or Europe, maybe that will change now but maybe not. Perhaps there is a business opportunity for someone to produce beetroot seeds here now ?

Whichever the way we've ordered a couple of bulk packs of seeds to cover ourselves for the next few years and also develop our own seed lines.

If folk can prepare beforehand then there is an opportunity to corner a market when other farmers find they are no longer able to buy beetroot seeds. Just bear in mind it takes beetroot two years to flower and set seed.

Right now there are still plenty of beetroot seed stock available but by next year expect that to become less.
