Anyone growing rhubarb out there? If so do you know which variety your growing. A few years ago I bought some rhubarb seed but seeds never started.

We were given a few plants and they did alright for the first year but then gradually rotted away over preceding summers. Our friend that grows it for chefs in Tokyo protects the plants from rain with a partial tunnel during the summer as that was the most dangerous time for it he thought.

@Zasso Nouka, thanks for the reply. I was worried about the heat being not good for rhubarb, I guess all that rain is a problem too. If I get some seeds I will make sure to cover them.

In our conditions we found it doesn't like the heat of summer that we have here and died back but sprouted again in the autumn but for us the real killer was all the rain a really wet summer can bring. You climate may differ from ours.

I brought some seeds over from back home (NZ) a few years ago but only managed to get about three fully grown plants from them.
Then last year I found that you could buy them in the home centres. Some places have seeds but if you look in the herb section you should be able to find some young plants too.
I've found the ones planted don't like too much wind and I'm thinking of moving them to a sunnier area next year. Mine have still grown in the rain here in Gifu but I'm considering building a tunnel for the rainy season myself after reading the above threads.
