Japanese Soap Operas

Post by dayunbao » Sun Jun 16, 2019 9:20 am

When I lived in China I discovered that the soap operas were really easy to understand. I'm hoping to find a similar kind of Japanese TV show. Any recommendations?

I wouldn't exactly call this a recommendation but Mrs Nouka records a dizzying array of Korean dramas screened during the day time to watch later. I've even found myself getting sucked into a few of them

Then Chiba Tv screens some incredibly dark 80's/90's Japanese dramas and by dark I mean really really dark. In comparison Black Mirror would seem to be a happy go lucky up lifting program.

I like Korean dramas.. well specifically the horror ones or the horror/crime combined ones.

I am not that (at all) into Japanese dramas but have watched some pretty good short series on Netflix.

Ooh, sounds good. Horror, or anything dark really, is my favorite genre. Most of the manga I've read has been horror. Junji Ito is my favorite mangaka.

Nice, thanks. Now I just need to find a place to stream them.

I would recommend Kita no Kuni Kara 北の国から。
A divorced father moves back to the Hokkaido countryside with his two kids. They fix up the old akiya and try to make their way. The show spans many years and is on the serious side.

For lighter, very easy to understand shows try anything in the asadora category. These morning drama series follow the interesting lives of figures important to the history of Japan.

Peruse the list and find a subject that is interesting to you. For example, Massan is about the first Japanese whiskey.

Damn, I need to start watching some of these. My Japanese studies have fallen by the wayside, too. Too much stuff going on at the moment.

Massan was quite good and also enjoyed Gochisōsan and Amachan was quite quirky and fun to watch.

When I lived in Korea as a student in the late 90s I used to watch lots of Korean dramas. I genuinely enjoyed them and they helped my Korean a huge amount.

I want to watch Japanese dramas to improve my Japanese but I just can't get into them at all. I'm not sure what it is exactly. Maybe it's that they're a little too much on the realistic side, a bit slow - not much seems to happen.

My wife loves watching the detective show Aibo. I can barely sit through it.

Modern Japanese drama's are terrible, actually that goes for TV in general. Aside from Itte Q there's nothing I want to actively go and watch.

Edit: Aside from watching dramas, if you have access to Japanese Amazon Prime or Netflix, watching your favourite films dubbed in Japanese is another good way to practice listening skills.
