Eric - the salmon experience sounds great!

Got our first shiitake of the season. Tasted like leather. :)
Really need some rain to get them fruiting, very dry at the moment.
Still, enjoying some sweet potatoes and peanuts.....

Gorgeous looking shiitake though.
Everything else looks really tasty.

How hard are peanuts to grow? I think in the future when we make our final move, I would love to grow my own peanuts and make peanut butter.

Nice veggies Ian,

What wood are you growing the shiitake on ? We tried a variety of hard woods a couple of years back and found they will grow on a lot of different ones not just shiinoki.

@Gonbechan,

Peanuts are dead easy, just keep them weed free.

Gonbechan - as ZN says, peanuts are very easy to grow. Both in the ground and in planters too. Don’t need much attention and can handle dry spells very well. Great to eat when boiled, fresh from the ground. Pic of some we had the other day, with some chestnuts on the side.

ZN - we usually use Kunugi (Sawtooth Oak) for shiitake. Inoculated some sakura logs early this year though, will see how they do next year.

That looks very tasty Ian,

Well at least if I can't split those Kunugi logs we've got we can always grow shiitake with them

Wow, Ian, nice haul!

So those of you with peanut growing experience~ they can handle dry spells, but how about rather wet/moist soil conditions? Do they require a ton of sunlight?

@Gonbechan~ home grown, home made peanut butter?!?! My spoon is ready ANY TIME!!

What could be easier.. I mean peanut butter is just pre-chewed peanuts.

@Donguri, normal Japanese growing conditions shouldn't cause them any problems, even the soggy wet summer we got this year didn't stop any of the peanut farmers around us harvesting a crop. Like most vegetables as you cut down on the amount of sunlight you get slower growth and or a reduced harvest but unless you are growing them in deep shade you should still get something. We have forest on either side of our main hatake block and plants at the forest ends of rows are slightly smaller and or slower than plants at other ends of the rows but they still bring in a harvest.

Hope that helps

Just finished the last of the sweet Kaki before whatever is living in the ceiling decides to eat them.

Last trip to Hokkaido was interesting to see all the salmon fishing men lined up with 20 to 30 rods each. Sort of takes the fun out of fishing.
