Helping a Tanuki
I've had to euthanize several tanukis riddled with mange in the past. Sometimes you have to do the kind thing, and put them out of the misery, especially come the winter, when they will just suffer a slow death due to the elements and having no fur.

I don't know man, obviously do whatever works in your situation but to me that seems a bit like visiting the doctor with a slight sniffle and when asking him about some medication to clear it up he replies "Yes we could easily clear that up with some readily available and cheap medicine but I think we should get you over to Dignitas instead"

Helping a Tanuki
It's nice to see a Tanuki that hasn't been run over and splattered all over the side road for a change.
Good work

He's really cute and comes running over when you call him and will quite happily take food from your hand if you are sitting down.
We also have a raccoon that comes by every now and then at night, it often stands up on it's back legs to peer through one of our windows and see what's going on inside the house. Didn't realise how large they are till you see them up close.

That's kind of cool, what about the cats though? Don't they go mental or are they usually away when they come and visit?

It looks like Tanuki know to give cats a wide berth, sharp claws and a swift punch to a sensitive nose are probably a good incentive to avoid too much contact. Raccoons also seem to prefer avoiding any really close contact with cats, probably for similar reasons.
I'm not sure if cats know that a quick trip to the vet and a shot of antibiotics will clear most things up but they seem to have far more confidence than their size alone would suggest.

Nice to see he looks like he's recovering. I know people that have pet foxes (if you thought skunks or ferrets smell!!) and tanuki are closely related so I imagine they are equally terrible as pets...but having a friendly wild one living naturally in the area seems really awesome. I often see them scamper across the road when I'm in Niigata but never during the day or close enough to offer food too. (the monkeys and bears though )
