Got another shipping container for storage. Will use the wood on site. And plan to make a roof between the two containers in the future.

That's awesome news Ian . Looking forward to see how you get on with them.Ian wrote:A week ago Japanese bees took up residence in one of four hives our friend has at the land.
Last month he put some attractant by the entrance (can see it in the pic), I think developed by Kyoto University.
The containers make great instant storage, Mrs N was looking at them when she was planning the cafe and had thought about bolting a few together and I did consider buying when when planning our shed. Is the wood all from your hinoki forest ?

Ian, that is amazing.
You might want to get some beneficial nematodes to pop in the soil under the hive.
You don't get up there everyday and small hive beetle can devastate a hive in very little time.
Japanese honeybees are immune to the verroa mite so you don't have to worry about them but after the rainy season, the beetles will be out and about.

ZN - Yes, the containers are a very quick way to get dry storage and have many other possible uses too e.g. one of ours has a 24V refrigeration unit which could probably be made operational again if needed.
The thick slabs of wood were at the land when we bought and have been under covers, but we spent a lot of time adjusting the covers after strong wind!
All the new wood was from some of our hinoki trees. We also gave the neighbour five cedar trees (in the pics) in return for some yunbo work. He will use those to build a structure at his place.
Oh, also bought the little Yanmar yunbo from the neighbour too. Not pink, but a great machine!
Something to take note of when buying the truck style of insulated containers is there are two centre rails underneath for support. When on the ground, best to also add corner supports (e.g. concrete blocks or steel) if the container is empty because typhoon strength winds can blow the containers over.
Gonbechan - Thank you for the tip. Much appreciated.
Our friend is mostly handling the hives, but I got vented beekeeping suits (one for my wife too) while in NZ recently and brought those back. Used them twice so far, once at the hive and once to remove a paper wasp nest from the above wood that was under cover. Wonder if the locals saw me in the suit driving the little yunbo. haha

Keeping busy as usual. A few more pics......
Making a road up through the forest to the top of the property.
Filling in some deep holes using material from the road digging.
The small excavator threw a track. Easy fix. The big excavator broke and required parts. Back up and running again.
Added a concrete edge across the top of the road near the ponds, to reduce erosion during heavy rain.

Container roof had a bend in it and was holding rainwater on the top. To help keep mosquito numbers down (almost zero at the moment) we took out a lot of wood and put in adjustable poles. Fixed.

That concrete runner looks like the perfect place for a brick laying machine to start fromIan wrote:IMG_4039.jpg

It's amazing to see how much work you are doing. How on earth do you get a caterpillar track back on ?
