The long way home

Post by xxxxtom »

Hi everyone,
I have finally returned to Japan last Tuesday after leaving last June and have only spent 3 weeks here since, so haven’t posted anything.
Work has taken me to Melbourne July to September then to St Louis October and November Quebec December and January and finally Saigon February to this week.

Anyway I’m here for a while got the builders in so I’ll start posting.

Cheers

Welcome back Tom,

Great to see you again, sounds like you've been doing quite a lot of Globetrotting while you've been away. Did you get a chance to tour around some of those places while you were working or was it just in and out for business ? Hopefully the former.

How did the garden fare while you were away, hopefully it hasn't turned into an impenetrable man eating jungle :D

Had a good look around St. Louis ate lots of bbq and drank plenty of beer. Boutique breweries everywhere and St. Louis is the home of Budweiser.
Didn’t get to see any of Quebec it was to cold , it got down to -31 that’s ridiculous.
Now Vietnam was great had a couple of weeks off whilst there and a couple of doses of Delhi belly.
Cheers

I grew up in the upper mid-west in the USA and was used to temps like that. The coldest I remember was around -40C. -30C wasn't REALLY that cold!
Energy was cheap back then and we wore t-shirts inside. We used to say -40 keeps out the riff-Raff. Didn't see too many homeless people on the street either!!!

Thermal underwear, heavy pants, a thick shirt, then a snowmobile suit with a parka on top of that with a good pair of insulated boots and you are ready to go walkabout at those -30 temps. Maybe a ski mask or beanie too.

No running outside and watch out for the plastic framed glasses. Also had to plug in the cars at night to keep them warm. (Soft plug heaters)

The best and only good part of winter was ice fishing. Best tasting fresh water fish is caught in winter. Walleye Pike - yum.

Ever seen the movie, Grumpy Old Men?

Now I'm an old fart and can't stand the cold. Don't even like to see photos of snow!!

Although I carry more than my fair share of personal insulation I'm just not cut out for temperatures like that. Luckily I'm an olympic gold medallist when it comes to sweating so hot weather doesn't bother me too much

Hi Lee B
minus 40 that's crazy I'd rather sweet it out.
We didn't have auto remote start on our rental car so someone had to kit up to go and start the car 10 -15 minutes before we drove anywhere.
I don't miss that.
Cheers
