Well as the JSL house porn expert, I think your house is absolutely gorgeous.
I particularly love how you kept the essence of the house but also imbued it with your own style and personality.
I am also super envious of your bathtub.

I am guessing those beautiful floors are hardwood and not a veneer flooring.

One thing that puzzles me is the upstairs windows.. They seem to be 2 different styles or is it just that one side is not finished?

Also belated welcome to JSL.

Yeah, the bathroom is pretty great. It has nice views, and you can also open the windows into the glass entrance room to make them even better. It's cold, but I don't mind that because I only need a few seconds to get to the hot shower then the bath.

The flooring is just a thin veneer, it's something called Japanese Larch (karamatsu) for the living room and cheaper pine for everywhere else. But we oiled it which makes it look darker.

The upstairs windows are weird - I'm not really happy with the way they look from outside, I loved the original look, but we optimized for the inside. We wanted the wooden ones for the front which has great views down the valley, and we have a kind of a wooden gallery thing. But we also wanted the bedrooms to be warm, and the wooden ones are inevitably a little bit drafty compared to the modern metal which closes to make a complete seal.

We've also got the metal ones in the back of the bedroom. The original windows from there migrated to the bottom of the ground floor, where we can open them to get air flowing through in summer. The flooring from upstairs is also reused, that's now the wall between the washitsu and what we left of the old workshop dug into the mountain. The stairs are all different kinds of wood. The carpenter did that at my friend's house to save money by using random stuff he had left over, and we liked it so we asked him to do it that way too. Likewise the walkway thing upstairs: Each slat is a different kind of wood.

I kind of wish we'd leaned into the black metal and used it for the windows at the front as well. There's already the chimney, and big old metal beams, which were a surprise to find since everything else about the place is wood, including the pillars they're resting on. We have the modern metal windows for the kitchen and somehow I feel like it works.

Ooo i see from the piccies that the metal ones are double glazed but maybe the wooden ones aren't. The wood ones are really pretty though.
I suppose you could always replace all the windows with custom made double glazed wood ones when you win the Lotto 7 or something lol

I absolutely adore the little wooden window seat that looks over the hip of the lower roof. And the wooden walkway. Just gorgeous.

I think it is just lovely what you have done with the house. Plus it must have a good vibe leftover from Nagakura Suiko.
She only passed away about 4 years ago and was a wonderful artist.

She certainly was. BTW I met someone who was trying to buy the second house she built after this one, not sure if they managed to persuade the heirs to sell. Apparently she liked to have her feet in the earth when she worked, so not only did she have an earth floor, she watered it...

Not practical but still amazing.
