Have you seen the prices they charge for JAS certification ? Eye wateringly expensive . I'm mean I'd like to get it but it is quite steep.
Yea I looked into what it would take and the cost and at this point can't see how it would benefit me right now

Maybe this is something to look into for the future, however my wife just pointed out that there are certain chemical fertilizers you are allowed to use with JAS, so then that's not really Organic is it?? Bit weird.

How much does it cost anyway for the membership?
I write a load of bollocks, don't take me seriously.

So long as you give them plenty of fertiliser, cukes are really hungry plants, they might not be too different from non organic growers. Not sure how long your soil was unused for but ours took a few years to become really good after being abandoned for so long, that will also have an influence on how things grow on your land.
A few years by the looks of it, also we changed the layout from a 3 tier field into just one large field so I don't know if that would have an impact on the soil with the amount of digging and such we did.

I think the only advantage it confers is you are legally allowed to say your produce is organic, quite a steep price for that.

You are also allowed to use pesticides between crops and completely sterilise the soil between crops with steam sterilisers . That one was to allow big agricultural companies that specialise in growing just one crop over and over in the same place instead of practicing crops rotation to be able to get JAS certification

Can't remember exactly but think it was between 100,000 - 200,000円 for the initial inspection and then the yearly fee was pretty steep too.

That will have an effect but you the soil should recover within a year or two and continue to get better from then on.

Wow really? That's crazy considering the price mentioned above for the inspection.

Your absolutely right, I'd completely forgotten about having to pay their travel expenses and lodging . It's almost like a scam when you consider that and some of the practices allowed which is probably why so few small scale organic farmers go for it. Having said all that it does open some doors for you selling at higher end places but it does feel like it's geared towards large companies rather than small producers.

Bamboo clearing.

Post by DocDoesFarming »

Thought I would show the final results after digging a water trench around and in the middle along with the electric fence just finished the other day.
This and the polytunnel (for whatever we fancy and the cucumber seedlings) I also just finished is starting to make our place look like an actual farm now.

Just wish I managed to get this stuff done a bit earlier.

Anyway, Job completed.
