I believe it.Zasso Nouka wrote: ↑Mon Nov 04, 2019 7:32 amI remember reading an interesting article in Scientific American many years ago that was the inspiration to get out of IT and do something more 'physical'. Was a long time ago now so don't remember all of the finer points but the basic premise was that working with your hands on something physically tangible was a lot more rewarding and mentally stimulating than working at a desk all day long in front of a computer.
They directly compared IT workers with craftsmen and observed brain activity while the two groups were working. Apparently our hands have an enormous amount of nerve ending for both tactile sense and motor control and this is reflected in how much brain area is taken up. See the cortical homunculus model showing how much brain area different parts of the body take up, the hands are huge.

Anyway, the long and short of the article was that folk that work with their hands stimulate a whole lot more of their brain when working than say someone working in IT and the mental rewards they get at the end of the day being able to see a physical object they have been working on was greater than knowing you've sorted out a particularly thorny network issue or crafted a well thought out software routine.
The article wasn't knocking working in IT and pointed out higher pay grades and less physically demanding work might have other rewards they hadn't measured. Apparently humans are hardwired to find crafting things with our hands a rewarding task and the article posited that it may go back to the millions of years we spent crafting flint tools.

I am stuck in the '90s and still playing Civ 2 and Colonization.

I think next time I will call my civilization Kumamon, so the message will say "XXX civilization destroyed by Kumamon."

I don't know how many hours I spent playing Civilization but it was probably my all time favourite game until Dune 2000 arrived.

I recently played and completed the Secret of Monkey Island for the first time ever the other week. Thoroughly enjoyed it, wish I played it before.
Also for those not in the know, the Archive.org has a huge collection of MS DOS roms on their site to play.

Re: What are you playing?
Completed The Simpsons arcade game on my retropie the other day. Last time I managed this was when I went to Pontins in 95.
This time though it cost me roughly 25 quid in continues I worked out.
