The wood-chip is a mix I think, smells really nice. The mill is down in Yamanashi-shi & all they do is mulch. I am not a pro but saw different types of trees being put through the chippers. The pieces are fairly large so will take time to breakdown.

It would definitely better work on top of plastic - but I hate plastic :D . I replaced the plastic with 2-3 layers of flattened cardboard boxes, with ~10-15cm of woodchip on top. In our previous house in Melbourne I had cardboard + 5-10cm of mulch - that lasted 2 years before weeds started getting through. So I hope at least 5 years with those extra 5cms of chips.
